Briançon, your base camp for high mountain activities, skiing, and climbing
Located at an altitude of 1,326 meters, Briançon is the highest town in France. Famous for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vauban fortifications and exceptional sunshine, it occupies a unique geographical position at the heart of the Southern Alps.
Situated at the crossroads of major mountain ranges—the Écrins, the Clarée Valley, the Queyras, as well as the Serre Chevalier and Montgenèvre ski areas—Briançon is the ideal starting point for all your mountain adventures, summer and winter alike.
Winter from Briançon: ski touring, off-piste, and ice climbing
In winter, Briançon's central position allows you to adapt to the best snow conditions of the moment in just a few minutes' drive:
- Ski touring: Directly access the preserved valleys of the Clarée (Laval, Drayères, Buffère, Chardonnet, Galibier, and Clot des Vaches huts), wild itineraries in the Cervières valley, or the pristine slopes of the Queyras. Mount Thabor (3,178 m) is a must-do classic in the area.
- Off-piste skiing & Freeride: Explore the off-piste routes of Serre Chevalier or cross into Italy via Montgenèvre and the Milky Way (Via Lattea) ski area. La Grave and its legendary Meije valleys are only a 45-minute drive away.
- Ice climbing: The Fournel valley in L'Argentière-la-Bessée (20 min) and the Freissinières valley offer some of the finest ice climbing sites in Europe, from beginner sectors to mythical multi-pitch routes.
Summer from Briançon: mountaineering and multi-pitch routes
Come summer, warm rock and the major peaks of the Southern Alps await you:
- Mountaineering: Set out to conquer the iconic peaks of the Écrins massif (Dôme des Écrins, Barre des Écrins, Pelvoux, Roche Faurio, Aiguille Dibona). On the Italian side, the majestic Mount Viso (3,841 m) offers a first-rate alpine ascent quickly accessible from Briançon.
- Climbing & Multi-pitch routes: Around Briançon, climbing possibilities are plentiful. From beginner crags like Rocher Baron to major multi-pitch routes on the Tête d'Aval des Tenailles de Montbrison, the region is packed with exceptional rock for all skill levels.
